How are fold mountains and ocean trenches formed?

Section
Detail
Key Ideas
  1. Fold mountains occur at collision (a type of destructive margin) boundaries.
  2. Ocean trenches and fold mountains occur at destructive margins (where subduction is occurring).
Terms
Fold mountains, ocean trenches, landforms
Starter
Main
1.   TDIT.
2.   Show presentation and then clip of collision margin and destructive margin.
3.   Students draw fold mountains onto a world map and label which are destructive and collision margins using NT p12 A, plus label Andes, Alps, Himalayas, Rockies, Mariana and Atacama trenches.
4.   Show collision clip again and students draw cross-section (profile) with labels (including key terms). Repeat for destructive margin possibly using simplified version of previous lessons diagram.
5.   Students draw NT p13 B.
Plenary
a.   What are fold mountains?
b.   What are ocean trenches?
c.   Name 2 fold mountain ranges and 2 ocean trenches.
